Why it's great when hospitals are slow
What? Hospitals slow are good ! ..What are you talking about?
The other day, I had a hospital appointment, I was dreading the long wait I figured I would have to endure for simple blood tests.
I am sure most people are familar with this. You arrive on time for your appointment only to be delayed hours? before you are served.
On this day however, I was in and out within 15 minutes. In the few minutes I was waiting, I heard an orderly walk buy and mention to a nurse, "Slow day today eh?". To which the nurse laughted and said "shh! you'll spoil it".
That's when it dawned at me, that a "slow" day at the hospital means fast service for the patient.
So the next time you have an appointment, cross your fingers and hope they are haveing a slow day..so you can have a fast one ;-)

Cellphone fun - Tips and Tricks

I love my new cellphone. The Sony Ericson w300i..Maybe because I've always liked swiss army knifes and with all the things packed in mp3 player, camera, infrared, bluetooth, radio...oh and it's a phone too.
If you have this phone, or anyone that comes with it's own DATA cable, infrared or bluetooth, you can download your pictures, ringones direct into your phone from your PC..why should you do it this way...because it will save you lots of $, downloading this stuff from inside the phone will cost your money.
Downloading form your PC and transferring into your phone is generally FREE.
More Tips for those who like them:
*#06# -> This causes the phone to list it's IMEI #. Write this number down and put it in a safe place, it can be used to identify your phone if it's lost or stolen and have it de-activated if necessary. It also saves you from having to find it by opening up the back of the phone, usually next to the battery.
*004*[Phone Number]# -> This activates you "Call Forward no/answer busy" option. This is great if you turn your phone off but still want calls to go to a local land line near buy. Unlike the regular call forward service. This phone works with your phone completely off, so you can maxmize your battery power. (Some phone plans try to charge your for call forward minutes, if you get this you should try to fight it. I don't understand how you can be charged ANYTHING if you are bypassing the network alltogether..maybe a 1 minute charge for the transfer but once your off the network it should not be costing you $ IMHO)
For more tips check out http://www.arcx.com/sites/GsmFeatures.htm
SMS -> email. Depending on your phone service provider, most if not all offer a simple email to SMS service, usually it's something like yourphonenumber@yourprovider.ca. Here are some examples:

**In Canada at least, rogers has this "feature" to prevent phone spam. Whenever you send to the email address, instead of getting the message you get a different message telling you to hit reply and send to have the message delivered to you. What this means is that what should be a free incoming SMS message now costs you $ to send the reply and get the actual message. If you call them, they will remove this "feature" but charge you an extra $5.00/month..hmmm some feature. I'm currently perfecting a way to fix this problem, and will post shortly about how I did it. So keep you eyes opened for it.
Update: Just visit bwebcentral.com/emailfwd and choose "Other" as your cell phone provider to fix this!

What is net neutrality?
A little background:
The internet, is a large collection of computers connected together. Connections are maintained by various companies (eg: Internet Service Providers ISP). In theory once your are online you can connect to any machine also connected to this super large network. Of course there are security technologies that keep you safe, but in theory everyone gets a fair share of "visibility" when they are online. So the network has no particular bias towards anyone site or other. Of course some can be more popular, and some may have faster servers, but the network itself doesn't impose limits on one company over another (eg: It's net neutral)
The problem is (unless it's just an urban legend) is that some companies want to control the bandwidth moving from one site to another, such that you have to pay a premium to get feature rich content and high quality. So for example you might visit CNN news and have to pay a subscription fee to access any of the CNN sites.
This could raise a problem for the general internet user, if they already pay a fee for their high speed internet connection, but every site they go to wants their own fee, where will this leave us
Here's a video from live.pirillo.com to give you a better idea of what this is all about.

Nothing in life is Free [USB flash drive from PNY (TigerDirect)]
Okay, Okay so I'm trying to make up from a previous 'faux pas'. A while ago I blogged about 2GB free SD cards from buy.com and I sent the link out to all my friends and thought..boy what a good boy am I.
As it turned out, the offer was FREE but only for US residents (buy.com does not ship to Canada and/or the rebate did not work in Canada).
I've been searching since then for a similar offer that worked in Canada to try and make up for confusing and/or disappointing everyone I know. I came across this offer and have more carefully looked into it, and here's what I have found.
TigerDirect in association with PNY is offering free 128MB USB flash drive. As I have learned to expect though there IS a catch. The product is $10 US and has a $10 US mail in rebate. So again it's FREE if you live in the US$. In Canada you get a $10 CDN rebate but the product is listed as $12.97. So it will still end up costing you $2.97. Here's a link to the US site as well
Okay, so then I think..well $2.97 still is a really good price for a 128MB USB flash drive right? So I quickly add it to my checkout and then I remember that there is a shipping free (about $17) for the item. So including shipping, in the end it costs me about $20 for a 128MB card, which is about what I would pay for it at a local store anyway. But actually I'm paying about $35 bucks and have to wait 8-10 weeks for my $10 rebate to be processed. (Offer expires 8/31/2007)
Things aren't looking so good, so I'm racking my brain thinking there's got to be a way to get a good deal out of this. I think to myself "I know I'll buy like 10 of them for all my friends". The shipping cost remains about the same (because they are very light) and if I split the $17 across 10 items, after rebates I'd still be paying abou $4 or so per flash drive, which is pretty good..WRONG you can see from the terms and conditions that there is a limit of 1 rebate per household (billing address). So I still would not see very significant savings. Worse still if you not the kind of person to read TOC's carefully, you might think you'll get a rebate on all the items and then a little hot headed when you are declined all but one of your rebates.
*However*, TigerDirect checkout DID point out to me when I tried to purchase 10 items, that I may be eligable for a $10 rebate for the total purchase, the checkout did not mislead me into thinking otherwise.
However, it turns out this cloud does have a silver lining. If I was intending to buy something at tiger direct anyway (I'm looking for a cool external hard drive) and I do like buying things from Tigerdirect. The shipping cost may increase a little, but you'll still end up getting good value for your money.
So I'm by no means suggesting not buying this item. If you have your eyes set on something already at tigerdirect you should add this "impulse" item and get your $ worth. However after being caught the first time, I thought I'd send out this warning. I will keep looking for a good deals, and let you know when I find them.
However, if you just looking for something for free, and just want one of these items. It's probably better to go to you local store and buy one for yourself.
As the saying goes, "If it looks to good to be true, it probably is", but then again, why pass up a good deal if one comes by?
Please Remember: It's a MAIL in rebate. So if you don't mail it in your not going to see any savings.

Phising..what it is and why it's bad
Today, I received my 1st phising email in by INBOX. I've known about phising for a long time. Basically "phising" occurs when people attempt to trick you into giving up your username /password information through email. Generally the way this works is that someone 'fakes an email' from someone/company you may know. (Eg: A banking instituation). And then links you to a fake website to enter your username/password
Faking an email is quite easy. Anyone can claim to come from any email address (eg: support@mybank.com) etc and the email is written in away that looks legit. I've said it many times There is no 'security' on from email addresses or names. So just because an email looks like it's from "someone" you know doesn't mean its trustworthy.
The email contains a link that LOOKS like it belings to the instituation when really it is a fake website that looks JUST LIKE THE REAL WEBSITE. Except that when you enter your username/password, the 'bad guy' logs it and now he has access to your accounts.
The email I recieved looked like this:
--------------------------------------------------------------
From: TD
Canada Trust csteam.refJ098213206W.td@tdcanadatrust.com
Subject: TD Canada Trust: urgent security notification for all clients!
(message id: GP6112579X)
Dear TD Canada Trust customer,
TD Canada

Please click hyperlink below to access EasyWeb Customer Form.

Thank you for choosing TD Canada Trust for your banking needs.
Please do not respond to this email. This mail generated by an automated

TD Group Financial Services site - Copyright © TD
--------------------------------------------------------------
So the email looks legit, it is asking me to login to the link and enter my username and password to complete a customer form.
HOWEVER, when I click on the link I actually go to: (note the bold portion)
easyweb.serverid-7437742.tdcanadatrust.com.go2rotte.tv/custserv/easywebform.jsp
Note that it looks identical except for the 'go2rotte.tv' portion. This is a FAKE website to try and gather my username/password info. It's very easy to miss if your not paying attention and to be fooled.
What should I do?
A legit company should NEVER ask for your username and password and link to there site. What they might do is tell you to login to your account to receive a message. They should not give you a link to login. Rather, if you use the online service, you already know the site to go and login and check.
Many anti-virus products such as McAfee automatically include add-ons for your browser that will help detect and warn you against phising attempts. However, the latest browsers including Firefox and IE including built in phising filters which will warn you of suspected phising sites or ensure that the website url that you are visiting is plainly visible to you so that you can compare it with what site you expect to visit.
The phising filter in IE7 maybe turned of my default, step by step instructions on how to enable the filter can be found here. http://www.ie-vista.com/phishing.html
Phising protection is enabled automatically in Firefox, and details about it can be found here
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/phishing-protection/
If you are not a firefox user, please consider
By the way..I probably have recieved phising before, but it was filtered out by SPAM filters. This one was did not get filtered.
