Family Note: If you are listening to this weeks audio podlet, please note that I recorded it back in February. Since then I have taken a second trip home, and we followed this same plan as explained in this trip, except there was no snow at the end !

In this weeks podet, I talk about my vacation and my sucess with my first ebay sale. In both cases I offer a few tips about travelling with kids and selling things on ebay, yes it's an odd combination, but that's just me I guess !

I'm getting more and more addicated to ebay, and have made myself a little "Ebay sellers kit" that includes things like wrapping paper, a digital scale, packing tape, measuring tape, etc etc. I like to pack everything up shortly after listing it, measure the dimentions for shipping and weight and I write it in pencil on the parcel itself

The importance of Timesheets

Jxlogo_future

Does it happen where you work too?

Every week we are required to fill out our time sheets, but not just one timesheet, sometimes two or 3. Each timesheet is for a different department, but they all say essentially the same thing. Some are just in more detail then othes.

Now I'm actually for timesheets. I think they can be a useful personal management tool for managing Online Time and Expense If nothing else, they help me keep track of where I have spent my time, to compare to where I budgeted my time for a particular period and figure out how best to plan my time in the future. They also are great to help me keep track of sick days, vacation days etc

Sponsored by Journyx

If you are in an industry that does client billing, they are also a very useful to keep track of how much to bill to your client. Some government grants will pay for certain positions or a percentage of those positions, in this case a timesheet can help keep track of how much of a persons time is available for credit.

In project planning, a timesheet helps the project manager compare estimates to actuals and improve upon the estimation process, and increase the quality of estimates and on-time delivery.

So all in all, timesheets can be an important measurement tool, but let us not forget the 'rule of double entry', we should never have to do it, NEVER, so entering timesheet data in more then one place is a waste of time.

But you don't just have to belive me, you can also check out these

Understanding Power of Positive Thinking

Norman Vincent Peale, wrote the book The Power of Postive Thinking, and he himself admits, he did not imagine it would be the best seller that it was. But he is glad to have reached so many people. But he was glad to have reached so many people.

It becomes quite clear when listening Dr Peale, that he was a preacher, in addition to his work as an author. However, regardless of your paticular spirtual beliefs and affiliations. His ideas on postivie thinking and attitude hold true.

Everyone has bad days right?

The question to ask yourself when you have a bad day..how did you day start? Did it start on an upbeat note?.. or did things start going wrong from the moment you stepped out of bed?

Whether we are aware of it or not, our brains are constantly at work, and if it is not doing something productive, it is probably sneeking in all kinds of "self talk". So when you get of bed and stub your toe, and you say to yourself "It's going to be one of those days", or "I souldn't have gotten out of bed this morning", you are already setting your day up for failure.
The core concept behind postive thinking is the notion that your mind (your subconscious or whatever you want to call it), will work to establish the vision we set for it. If we set low expectations, and no vision, we will delivery low quality of work, and never really get anywhere. This inturn will make us feel low, and qusetion ourselves, lower our self-confidence and continue a vicious downard spiral of self fulfilling defeat.

If we don't set a vision, if we don't adopt an attitude of postivity, we allow our negative thoughts and ideas to creep in. We might not even be aware of this, we might not hear them. We automatically push things out of our mind and may not even notice the long term pain that it causes.

Steps toward Postive Thinking:

0 - Become aware of what your thoughts/feelings are. I find guided meditation helps witth this.

1 - Set your vision (long term) and your expectations (daily). How do you envision your day, when problems occur (and they will), how do you envision yourself handling this problems, with confidence, in high spirits. Imagine in advance, the positive additude you will apply to the situation. It won't always work, but it givs you the best chance. You are pre-programming yourself to choose your response and not be re-active to it.

2 - As you become more and more of your "inner voice", write down the thoughts that seem to occur most frequently. For each "thoughtlet" ask yourself. Does this thought work for me? Is it helping me? If these thoughtlets are designed to hurt you/ lower your confidence. Develop for yourself counter-statements. Just as your brain has been trained to fill your head with these "idle thoughts". You can re-train your brain with positive re-inforcing thoughts to counter-act the effect. Challenge those negative thoughts - openly and honestly. Look out for the traps we fall all fall into and say to yourself, "No that is not true, I am tricking myself"

3 - Take time at the end of each day to reflect upon it (perhaps write these down in a log.. or a blog). How did your day end up, compared to how you envisioned it. What worked well today? What did not? Should I make any changes to my thoughts tommorow?

4 - Learn to have faith. Regradless of your spirtual beliefs. I belive the one of the ten steps for substance abuse, something like "Find God as you understand him/her". We are hardwired to believe in things we cannot hear, or see, but we just "feel". This feeling can be a source of great comfort at times when we feel low, when we feel like we are loosing hoope and it is an important tool to continue the flow of positive thinking within our own minds.

Two ways of viewing people in society:

1) The worlds is made up of "Good People" and "Evil People" There are "evil" people in the world. The evil ones go around delibrately hurting others, causing pain and they have no remorse or regret for doing so

2) The world is made of mostly good people, although there may appear to be a lot of evil people, in reality there are very few truely evil people. Often it is just good people that make poor chices and bad mistakes. Everyone can make mistakes/accididents. Most people after the fact will apologize and try to learn from these mistakes. These are "unintentional" things that can happen.

To quote a lesson from a prior employer

"You come close to what you aim for..So aim High !"

Business Interview Test

This one is a classic "Giraffe Test", reportly done by Anderson Consulting. The rumor is they said around 90% of the professionals they tested got all questions wrong. But many preschoolers got several correct answers. Anderson Consulting reportedly said this conclusively disproves the theory that most professionals have the brains of a four year old. So How do you put a giraffe in the fridge?

King Cole caught me

I love tea, and I would have to say my favorite orange pekoe brand would be King Cole. Unfortuantly, it is also often the most expensive, so I don't buy it very often.

Every once in a while, King Cole runs a promotion, called the "King Cole Cup of Cash". Very similar to other promotions. You buy their tea, and inside the box is a ballot which you send off to be entered into various weekly draws. Each week, they spin a wheel to reveal the prize and award it to a randomly selected entry.

The last few times they did this, I bought spent the extra $ and bought the tea. However, this last time, I didn't even send in the entry form. This got me to thinking.

Here is a promotion, that sucessfully had me buy a brand I like, but otherwise would not have bought because of the cost, that I bought to enter a contest, that I didn't even bother to enter !
Let's assume that King Cole, does not intend on loosing any money for this campaign. To do this they simply have to bring in 'X' new customers attracted to the campaign to cover the 'Y' dollars they will give away within the promotion period..and Lets suppose only a fraction of those actual enter the contest..seems like a pretty good deal for King Cole right?

...and roll-up the rim to win works the same way right? How many 'new' customers are brought in during the promotion period.

What a concept.

By the way, most contests of this nature, can be entered with no purchase required. So you don't have to actually buy the product to enter the contest, you usually just have to send a request to headquarters and then will send you an entry form (or an empty cup, in the case of roll up the rim to win)

Goal Setting Tips

By setting and attaining goals one can achieve more happiness and confidence in their life.

1) Start with small and easy to accomplish goals, E.g.: I will smile at least once today, I will compliment myself at least once.

2) Do not make a list of too many goals. Do not set a second goal until you are satisfied with your work on the first.

3) Choose goals which you can be proud of once accomplished. Remember the reward of happiness and confidence awaits you at the end.

4) Try not to concentrate on the "entire picture" of the goal. Take things day by day. For example, if your goal is to finish problem 8 in math. Don't worry about problems 9-10,000 or problems 1-7.

5) Keep a list of goals and accomplishments. This list can be your own secret and is useful to review on days when you are down and need a confidence boost.

6) Break large goals which seem "too hard" or impossible into smaller, more manageable ones. Concentrate on only one small goal at a time and be proud of what you are doing now rather then worrying about what you need to do

7) As you complete a goal, compliment yourself and think about what goal you would like to try next.

8) Some goals are never entirely completed. Phrase your goals positively. i.e.: I will do some cleaning today. Not -> "I think I might " or "I should" clean everything today.

9) Decide why you set a goal and what you hope to accomplish by it. Try to avoid "shoulds" and "musts". A goal brings happiness only if you let it.

What ever became of the CB Radio?

In this weeks podlet, I talk about the old CB Radio. Perhaps you've had one of these yourself? We used to have one setup at our house, but there was never anything interesting on the channels. Back in the day, it was fun to just open a channel and chat about whatever you wanted on the citizens band. Of course now with the internet, we live in a much different world, but CB Radio died out long before the internet, what caused this? Will this happen to user generated online content someday as well? Hmm...

A simple Mistake

We all make little mistakes, but sometimes the smallest of these can cost big money. Today's quiz is about a very small mistake that resulted in millions of dollars. Try the quiz - then reflect on your daily mistakes and the repercussions they may have. A new ship had just been constructed, and everything had pretty much gone to plan. However, near the end of the production, someone spotted that one of the lettters on the small sign displaying the ship's name had been put on back to front. As a result, tens of millins of US dollars had to be spent to correct the error. Today's brain warm up... How could such a small mistake cost so much money?

Return for refund and get 5 cents

Ever wonder why you get 5cents for returning a bottle for recylcing?

Why is it not more? why do they give you any money at all? Many places charge a 10c bottle deposit for recycling when you buy the bottle, so in reality, you are just getting balk half of your own money. So why not just give them the 5c up front and eliminate the refund?

The truth is, the whole thing is a psychological "experiment" being played on you. It is an attempt to produce a state in your mind known as "cognitive dissonance"

In a classic experiment students are asked to perform tedious and pointless tasks tasks. For example turning pegs quarter-turns, putting spools onto a tray, emptying the tray, refilling it with spools, and so on. After a long period of doing this, the students were told the experiment was over and they could leave.

However, the experimenter then asked the subject for a small favor. He asked the participant to try to persuade another subject (a planted person) that the dull were actually interesting and engaging. Some participants were paid $20 for the favor, another group was paid $1, and a control group was not requested at all to perform the favor.

As the subject leaves, he/she is asked to fill out a survey about how much he/she enjoyed the tasks being preformed. Those in the $1 group rated the tasks more positively than those in the $20 group and control group.

So let's think about this for a minute, you are given a boring task, you know it wasn't exciting, and you are asked to convince someone else that it is exciting, when clearly it is not.

So basically you are either

a) Given no money and asked to lie to another person
b) Given $1 to lie to another person
c) Given $20 to lie to another person

Depending upon your personal ethics, it might not be a big deal for you to tell a lie for $20. It's a small lie, and hey you're getting $20 so what the heck. So when you are later asked to tell how you "Really feel" about the task, you can be honest and say "It was very boning", even though you just told some other guy it was really exciting

In situation a) you might not lie at all, or your lie might not sound very convincing, it is not in your best interest to lie, what's the point?. When later you are surveyed, you will probably give an honest opinion.

Situation b) is where things really get interesting. For most people $1 is probably not enough justification to tell a lie, but you did tell a lie, and you know you lied to the other guy and told him the task was exciting. So you mind races to find further justification for your lie. Internally, you end up convincing yourself, "Well the tasks couldn't have been ALL that boring, yeah, it was a little exciting wasn't it?" You trick yourself, you tell yourself this mind numbingly boring task wasn't really all that bad, and this is what you tell the researcher when he surveys you later to ask.

Bottle refunds (and many other things) work on the exact same principle. A reward is offered, but it is not too much. You have to search yourself for additional justification for the action, and not just the reward itself. So you convince yourself, we'll I'm also recycling to help the environment, because 5cents isn't enough justification by itself.

If everyone got back let's say $5 for every bottle, in the short term I'm sure EVERYONE would recycle, but what happens when the money runs out?, all the recycling stops, immediately, no one is recycling to help the environment, they are doing it for the money.

And this is the experiment being played on people everyday. Can you think about other examples of where this occurs? To what extent might this be used in your business? in employer/employee relationships perhaps?..Think about it !
